The plot behind "Persuasion"
Ciaran stars in the 1995 movie adaptation of the book written by Jane Austen, "Persuasion". In this movie, he plays the role of Captain Frederick Wentworth. The Captain was engaged to the socialite Anne Elliot. Anne’s family has come into severe financial difficulties, and through a twist of fate, the two find each other when Anne’s father allows Captain Wentworth’s boss, the Admiral, to rent their estate. At first their relationship is quick and sweet, and they eventually find themselves in love and, soon after, engaged. As fate usually does, the snobby family of Anne has convinced her that the poor Mr. Wentworth is below her social status. Although deeply in love, the pair separate. The film picks up eight years later, and when the former lovers meet again, Anne is shocked to learn that Frank is no longer poor, but a powerful, rich and even more handsome Captain. The irony and the plot thicken as Anne, who daydreams of the past, bears witness to the dashing Captain court her brother-in-law’s sister, Louisa. An accident that almost leaves him dead makes him realize his true love for Anne. The film shows the battle between the Captain and another suitor, the aristocratic William.
Portraying the Captain was one of Ciaran's most acclaimed roles. He showcases his talent and penchant for acting. His supporting cast is incredible, and the movie is thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end.
